Question GE Freezer - comp not shutting off?
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: FUF17DADRWH
Age: 5 - 10 years

I have a GE Freezer that up until lately had been working fine. Symptoms now are:
  1. Compressor appears to not shutoff, even at warmest setting
  2. Ice forms around drain and eventually fills with ice

I have taken the inside apart and completely defrosted the system. There was also ice buildup *between* the door and the screwed on door shelves!

The system cools quite well -- I am getting an inside thermometer to see what the temp actually is. Ice buildup at the bottom tells me that the system is going through its defrost cycle -- but perhaps the compressor isn't cutting off during this cycle and therefore freezing whatever is melted?

Looking for some tests that I can perform and possible parts to look at.

Thanks

This sounds like the cold control.

Can you please verify your model number.

FUF17DA and the rest of the numbers do not seem to link to anything. I've discovered that the DAA, DAB, and DAC models appear (at least to me) to all be the same.

I kind of honed in on the temp control, too. I can run it through the entire range and it seems to simply not work.

Thanks!

Take the freezer back panel off and check for a partial defrost. All your coils may not get defrosted. If so you may have a bad defrost thermostat. If that is ok measure the freezer temperature. It should be well below zero, like 10 below. If above zero you may have system problems and you will need someone to check it out.

Well, I did place a freezer thermometer inside and the system runs the temp down -- and there isn't an issue with ice on the coils. The problem seems to be that the compressor *never* shuts off no matter where I put the temp control. Ice forms on the drain hole and eventually clogs the drain up. This seems to indicate to me that the unit is running through the defrost cycle but the compressor isn't shutting down and simply re-freezes the water before the water has time to exit.

Temp control unit replacement time?

You have a bad cold control, really bad, before replacing, make sure the control capillary line is snug against the evaporator and not jarred loose.
