Default GE bottom mount freezer is icing up
Brand: General Electric
Age: 5 - 10 years

My 8 year old GE bottom mount frezer is iceing up. I have played with the temperature setting (making the fridge colder/warmer and freezer colder/warmer) but no combinations of temperature change will prevent ice from building up in the bottom of the freezer. It seems to be coming from a little hole on the back wall of the freezer about half way up.
Is some sort of drain plugged or frozen?, if so can how can I fix this?

Remove back panel in freezer and use boiling water to defrost ice. Be carefull and just put water in the drain area. I use a turkey baster for this. After this check drain for blockage.

Default Removing back panel ?

I'm having the same problem. How does one remove the back panel of the freezer section of a GE TCX18? I can't see anything obvious. The manual is no help.

on my g.e. there was no real back panel to remove.
on the rear of the fridge near the bottom there should be some tubing. remove this where it enters the freezer and defrost/unplug this tube. be careful to put pieces back the way they came out.
i had to remove the bottom panel to put the tubing back in place. it is a cardboard panel held with about 6 screws.

Gotcha - I tried removing the drain hose but being it's made of cheap plastic, I was concerned that it would break. I'll try again.

Thanks for your input.

OK - the rear (outside) of my fridge (GE Model TCX18) has two metal box-like shields held on with screws. From one of them, there's plastic tubing running into the drain pan. I removed the metal (insulated) shield. Underneath, screwed to the fridge, is a black device that the tubing plugs into which I took to be the drain. I unscrewed the device from the fridge wall, but as it didn't seem easy to remove, I was afraid if I forced it, I wouldn't be able to reconnect it so I approached from the tubing end. This device is 'S'-shaped, which makes it difficult to clean out, but with a syringe & baster, I managed! You should have seen the crud that came out. No wonder the drain was backing up into the freezer.

If this black drain thing pulls out from the fridge itself to facilitate cleanout, I'd like to know for when I have to go through this again in a couple of years.
