Default Full size Freezer will not drain
Brand: Other
Model Number: FV1787W
Age: 5 - 10 years

When I lived in Canada, I purchased a full size upright freezer on 02/20/98 from a major department store called EATONS. It is their own brand called VIKING. A year later on 02/23/99 it would not defrost and they replaced the "defrost heater heat shield". I think the problem has started again...when the freezer defrosts the water runs down the inside to a small ridge and down to a drain hole in the lower middle of the the freezer. Problem is the drain hole keeps freezing up so the water collects in the bottom of the freezer and re-freezes.

Has the same part failed? Any idea who made this Freezer and where I could get a new heat shield if that is what you think is wrong?

Thanks (getting tired of breaking up the ice every two weeks with a rubber mallet)

It sounds like the drain is plugged.

Defrost the drain hole with a hair dryer and then run a piece of firm but flexible down through the hole to the drain pan.

Where are you located now?

cleared the drain several times, it keeps freezing up solid. I assume there is a part that heats the drain area so it does not freeze up. The drain is about 8 inches up the back wall of the freezer, in the middle, and is positioned at the base of a "V" ledge that collects the water off the back of the freezer and drains it down to the bottom of the "V". I suspect there is the "heat shield" and under this "V" is a heating wire that comes on when the freezer defrosts to ensure the drain hole/tube is not full of ice....but without a schematic and parts list I am just guessing.

General Electric use to make most of the appliances for Eaton's.

Here is a number for General Electric
US 1-800-626-2005 Canada 1-877-959-8688.

The schematic should be on the freezer either on the back of the freezer or in an envelope under the freezer.

If there is a heater on the drain it could be faulty.

Unfortunately I don't have any information on Canadian models.

Not sure, will check. definitely nothing in the drain itself but maybe there is a heated collar
