Default Fridge is warm freezer working fine
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 50512002
Age: 5 - 10 years

Side by side fridge - once a year for the last three years this happens. I am not sure what is happening that the relay or something else is causing the fridge side to not work and the freezer woks fine. I am not sure if my kids are causing this as they are constantly opening and closing the door.

The problem that you are having is likely caused by one of three things:

The defrost heater located in the freezer.

The defrost bi-metal located in the freezer.

Or the defrost timer located in the fridge control panel.

The timer is located behind the light switch.

If you look at the bottom of the control panel you will see a little button that has a slot that you can turn with a screwdriver.

When you hear the compressor running turn the button slowly until the compressor shuts off. This will mean that you are in the defrost cycle.

If the fridge has a large build up of frost then it will take longer to defrost than the allowed time on the timer. You may have to do this twice.

The defrost cycle is about 20 minutes.

If this cures the problem and the fridge starts to cool again then you will need a new
defrost timer.

Here is a link to your fridge model 50512002.
