I have looked at the answers to similar problems, but none seem to relate to my situaton. My freezer is fine -- cold to 0 deg. But my fridge does not get below 46.

Over the last few days, I have tried your answers to the similar threads:
--the vent is open,
--the evaporator fan is spinning,
--the coils do not have too much ice,
--the defrost mechanism seems to be working fine -- one time, I saw it start a defrost cycle and all the ice melted. I came back 30 min later and it was cold again.

What else could be causing this?

The main idea is for the cold air to circulate thru the fresh food side from the freezer. See if the air comes in on top and freely goes back to freezer on the bottom
