The light comes on in the fridge and top freezer when we open the door, but it is not cooling at all. We had this problem about a month ago. We emptied all the food and put it in another unit, and it suddenly started working again. We thought the problem was a fluke and it was OK until it stopped working again today. What do we do? What shall we check? Are there a few simple steps to follow to diagnose the problem and possibly fix it without calling a repair person? Thanks.

I have the same problem on my Kenmore. I vacumned the front coils and let it sit for 24 hrs, but it still will not cool. Sears charges $70 just for a service call. I'll watch your form to see what to do.

Your schematic should be behind the kick panel under the door. Check if you have an adaptive defrost control or manual defrost timer, sometimes they fail.
If not start turning things like the cold control or the manual defrost timer, usually behind the control panel.
Next go to the compressor and pull off the plastic cover. Plug in fridge, is there 115 volts there, if so, you have a blown compressor.
If not you will need a meter to check components like the cold control or defrost timer.
