Default Fridge only runs when bumped
Brand: Amana
Model Number: TQ18NB
Age: More than 10 years

My Amana quit running and now will only turn on when bumped. Someone suggested the relay was bad. On the parts list there is a relay that is no longer available and a relay-start that are both listed as part 16 on the diagram. Is it the relay that is bad and which part do I need?
Tom.

You will need the manufactures number off the model number tag to determine which relay is for your fridge. The number will start with a P.

Where do you have to bump the fridge to get it to work?

You may have a bad cold control.

Here is a link to your fridge model TQ18NB.

The first time it started was when I pulled it off the shims under the back wheels. Now to start it I just give it a shake. So do you think it is the relay or cold control? Or, because it is almost 18 years old, should I be looking for a new refridgerator?
Thanks, Tom.

Also, which relay is for which "P" number? I see one relay is no longer available and one is in stock.

Are you shaking the whole fridge or just the compressor?

The manufactures number is on the tag with the model and serial number.

The manufactures number start with the letter p and then six to seven more numbers.

With that number I can tell you which relay is for your fridge and if it is the one that is still available or is no longer available.

Your relay part number is PS112543.

It is the one that is available.

In stead of shaking the whole fridge try tapping on the relay this will make it more clear that that is your problem.

OK, I ordered the relay and took the cover off the back of the refrigerator and can't find anything that looks like the relay. Any idea where the relay might be hiding?
Tom.

The relay is on the side of the compressor.

Thanks for your help Sheila, however I need a little more advice.
The relay isn't just like the one on the fridge. The old one has two wire hookups and the new one has three. Is it the right relay and, if so, is it ok to have a hookup with nothing attached to it?
Also, when I installed the new relay, the fridge still did not turn on until I shook it even more than with the old relay. What else could be wrong?
Thanks, Tom.
