Default Fridge OK, top of freezer warm, bottom of freezer cold, no ice or water dispense
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: gsh25sgpa
Age: 1 - 4 years

This problem became evident when all of the ice in the ice maker bin melted and poured into the floor. I did some reading here and went to collect all of the useful facts I could.

The fridge side seems ok. The freezer side seems to keep things frozen in the lower half. The upper half cannot freeze water into ice. I pulled the fridge out and removed the bottom rear panel. The condenser is definitely running. To the right of the condensor, the fan mounted on the end of the coils is running. The copper tubing leaving the condenser is cold. I think I usually notice a little more noise and an air current when I open the freezer. It is very still and quiet now. I made the freezer colder and the fridge started freezing water.

The ice dispenser on the front of the door engages the auger in the ice bin. I believe that if there were ice in the bin, it would dispense. The water dispenser in the door sounds like it triggers the solenoid, but no water comes out.

(Side note: The water dispenser failed once before. Turned out a large bag of ice in the freezer was causing some kind of problem and the water line to the dispenser froze up. There was frost in the freezer. I unloaded the freezer and turned it off with the door open. An hour later the water flowed again. Has only happened once.)

Any ideas?

My ferrigerator & Freezer are both cold at bottom and warm at the top. We had a power outage for 5 days and used a generator for power. The fan in the freezer would not turn on its own so I replaced it, still doesn't trun. The water in the door doesn't work either. Any Ideas?

Funny you say that, Ed. I had checked again yesterday and found that the top of my fridge is warm and the very bottom is freezing water. On the off chance that some component is frozen up (I'm not optimistic), I unplugged and emptied the whole fridge/freezer. I left the doors open overnight. Its been about 14 hours and I am about to go check on it. I'll update after that.

Water will now dispense out of the door. The evaporator fan is not coming on. I removed the panel in the back of the freezer that covers the coils and turned on the power. The coils near the bottom quickly frosted up. I closed the door and waited a little while. I came back and the evaporator fan is not coming on.

I am pretty sure I have to replace either the evap fan or the motherboard (or both!). There are guides online to test the fan motor itself, but they address 2 or 3 wire motors.
How do I test the fan motor?

I hope my thread helps someone. It didn't help me much. I replaced the fan first, which did not help. I replaced the motherboard and now its fixed. I will leave the new fan in because it is reported that the fan or thermistor can nuke the motherboard. You should replace the fan and motherboard together. Only cost me about 160 bucks or so.

The mother board is definetly your problem. You probably has sone frost build up on the very back wall of the freezer at the bottom. The water dispenser not working is the trigger, that your mother board is out. It is located on the back of the refrigerator, with a metal cover covering it. Unplug the refrigerator, and replace it. No big Deal. If you need me you can get me at my web site.Tom
