Default Fridge odor
Brand: Hotpoint
Age: 1 - 4 years

power was off to tenents fridge allowing freezer to defrost blood into tray. I removed and cleaned blood on top and under removeable tray in freezer but two weeks later there is still bad odor coming from freezer compartment. Did it get into defrost area? Would bleach kill it?

thx for any answers

Sounds like it did leak under the panels

You will have to remove the panels and give it a good cleaning
Add a couple tsp's/quart baking soda to the wash water and some detergent (dish soap or Mr. Clean)
Bleach will kill any mold but really will not do much for odors
If the unit uses fiberglass insulation you may have to replace it. If it uses styrofoam washing it thoroughly should do
Put some washing fluid in a spray bottle and spray the coils thoroughly
I would remove the drain line from the tray underneath and let it run into a bucket
You do not want to overflow the tray, just remember to put it back when you are done
Once you are satisfied that you have done a good job and made sure everything is dry put the unit back together
Place backing soda or activated charcoal or cat litter in a tray on the bottom of the freezer and plug it in. You use a tray so there is more surface area to the odor absorber.

It is a lot of work, it is aroyal pain in the butt and it is not guaranteed to do the job.

Another thing that will remove odors is newspapers.

Moisten and lay approximately 3 to 4 sheets of newspaper on the shelves and allow to dry.

If is really bad try coffee.

Take 1 pound of coffee and place in cups on the shelfs let the fridge run for about five days and the odor should be gone.
