Default Fridge getting hot, freezer frosting up.
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: GSS22SGR
Age: 5 - 10 years

My GE side by side gets real hot (about 100F) while the freezer stays cold. The freezer is frosting up a little... and the damper is working.... I think. About a week ago I woke up to this problem and unplugged it then plugged it back in and it started getting cold again. Then today it did it again. I discovered the following today. When it does this, the damper is shut between the two sides. There isnt any voltage (By wireless voltage tester!) to the defrost thermostat or heating element before or after it shuts off (tested before reseting and then after). It opens after restarting by unplugging. Since there is no timer I'm thinking its the defrost thermostat since I tested the heater and it was good. But... the damper has a temp switch/sensor too... and since its soo unpredictable (twice now in a week) and there is no voltage to the thermostat maybe its the moboard??? Does the damper shut when it goes into defrost mode? If so... mine is shutting but the heating elemnt doesnt come on! I know this is a common problem (from reading all the threads) but mine seems to be different... no defrost timer! Repair clinic.com says its either a bad defrost heater, thermostat or damper. What controls the damper... the sensor coming from it or the moboard?
Please help!
PS I put it a new defrost element about a year ago!

Next day after problem... and its working still with no problem. I didnt do anything to fix it either!

From what you are saying the operation is very erratic this would be a indication that the mother board is failing.

If the defrost thermostat was faulty the heater would not come on.

Here is a link to your fridge model GSS22SGR.

You will need the last part of your model number for a detailed parts list.

You can find the complete model on a tag in the fridge section.
