Default Fridge and freeser not cold enough
Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: frt22rrh
Age: 5 - 10 years

I have a Frigidaire top freezer model # FTR22RRH that is running almost constantly. Fridge temp is about 46 degrees, freezer temp is about 22 degrees. There is frost building up on the back panel of the freezer. The condenser fan is running and the condenser coils are clean. The evaporator fan is running, but there seems to be little airflow coming from the vents in the freezer. We have witnessed the fans and compressor turning off once each day for the last three days, but we haven't been sitting by the fridge waiting for it to turn off, either. The malfunctioning fridge and freezer still have some non-perishable items in them (canned drinks and ice, etc.) if that matters (in other words, the fridge and freezer are not completely empty).

I have a voltmeter and an infrared thermometer. What shoould I check first, and how do I check it? The fridge is about 7.5 years old, and it worked perfectly until a couple of days ago.

Thanks!

-Keith

The fridge is not defrosting.

Locate the defrost timer in the front left corner behind the kick plate under the door.

With the compressor running turn the knob on the timer until the compressor shuts off.

Remove the panel on the inside of the freezer at the back wall and see if the coils defrost.

If the coils defrost you will need a new timer.

If the coils do not defrost you will need to check the heater and the defrost thermostat.

The thermostat can only be check when it is cold.

Here is a link to your fridge model frt22rrh.

You are missing the last two digits of your model number.

You can find them on a tag in the fridge section with the serial number.

Thanks so much, Sheila. After I posted the question, I found a website that has very similar information, and I did just as you said. The defrost heater does come on. However, the timer is turning now and I wonder if it could have just gotten stuck? Now the fridge and freezer are working fine. Should I go ahead and replace the timer anyway?
Thanks again!

You will likely have to replace it.

If it got stuck once it will likely stick again.
