Unhappy Fridge defrosting system freeze up
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: ?? Will Check ??
Age: 1 - 4 years

I have a Whirlpool Fridge that is a 2002/2003 model. Back in January, the defrost system froze up and started pouring water into the refrigerator. I would find puddles of water on the top shelf and it would trickle all the way down to the bottom. Back then, I unplugged the fridge for 24 hours and let the entire system defrost and it worked fine again after that.

Now its about 7 - 8 months later, I am getting the same problem of the water puddles inside the fridge. I dont have masses of food backed up against the back of the fridge so there seems to be good airflow for the defrost system to work with. I can defrost it again by unplugging the fridge for another 24 hours but I don't want to have to revisit this problem again in a few months.

Has anyone encountered this problem before? Is there a part that has to be replaced on my fridge so the defrost system does not freeze up again? Thanks in advance for any help.

Measure freezer temperature, if less than say 12 degrees, you have no defrost problem. Remove freezer back panel and freezer bottom tray. You will probably find a frozen drain. I use a turkey baster to stick hot water right in the frozen drain. Once thawed out, I wrap a heavy piece of copper wire around the defrost heater and down the drain, This will prevent drain freezup!
