Default Fridge cycling hot, then cold;freezer okay
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: gsh22kgpa
Age: 1 - 4 years

Fridge alternately gets hot(smells bad) and then cools down. Serviceman suggested it could be that 'damper" flap (upper left) isn't always opening to allow cool air. Adjusting digital setting doesn't trigger damper to open. Serviceman tested damper contacts. All okay. Said he could only be certain it was damper if it failed completely. Help!
Freezer works okay but should I remove all frozen food in case whole unit crashes?

It could be a problem with the main control called the mother board.

Where is the smell coming from?

If you have an other freezer to put your food in it may be a good idea.

Here is a link to your fridge model gsh22kgpa.

Thanks Sheila:I have removed everything from the freezer (just in case). I can't locate source of smell which only occurs when fridge interior is hot. It's not a spoiled food smell. It's quite unpleasant but may be related to burning or overheating of some part?
Service tech also mentioned motherboard but says there is no way to diagnose problem until heat is constant;that it could be damper, motherboard or thermostat or...all expensive repairs! Can motherboard or thermostat be each tested independently? I hate to have to incur expense of replacing item 1 only to find that doesn't solve problem.

The mother board can be tested.

There is a test sheet that the technician can use to determine what part has failed.

The sheet is usually found either in the kick plate or in and envelope under the fridge.

The mother board is at the back of the fridge behind a small panel.

See if this is where the smell is coming from.
