Unhappy Frezer Iceing up no cold air in refrigerator
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 596.72282200
Age: 1 - 4 years

My refrigerator does not get cold unless I defrost the freezer. Once the freezer is defrosted everthing will work fine for 2-3 weeks, Then I lose the cold air in the refrigerator and I notice the freezer grids in the back of the freezer are frozen solid with ice. This refrigerator is about 3 1/2 years old and it has been nothing but trouble. If anyone has any idea's on this I would appricated any direction as to what I need to do to fix this problem.

What you have is a defrost problem. This product has an adaptive defrost control, which is a board, that controls the defrost cycle. The best way to approach this is unplug the refrigerator, and open the freezer door, and take the icemaker out, and the back panel off. If you have a meter, check the defrost heater for continuity, it should be good. They never go out on that product. Up top on the top of the evaporator, on the right side is the defrost thermostat, I bet this is our culprit, because I replace quite a few of these. Put your ohm meter on it, and check for ohms. if you get continuity, it is good, if not replace it. Also visually inspect it, sometimes the top metal portion of it pops up, and then you know for sure that is the problem. If all of that checks good. replace the adaptive defrost control.
