Default Freezing problems
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: tcx18paacrbs
Age: 5 - 10 years

The model is a bottom freezer type. When the fridge goes through the defrost cycle the water freezes on small metal trough that directs the water through the drain hole. The ice builds up until it stops the fan that directs air to fridge and freezer. The defrost timer has been replaced,No one seems to know why this would happen after about 5 years.

See what is preventing the water going from the trough to the drain tube. Maybe the drain tube is partially stopped up and draining so slow that it has time to freeze. Clear the tube with air pressure. force air with a baster or a tube you can blow through. Pour solution of bleach and water to kill mildew and mold which helps stop it up with all the dust under the unit.

the drain tube drains well, the trough stays cool to the point that water freezes very quickly when it runs down it.i 'm note sure what is keeping the metal that cold.

I haven't seen one. I'm just thinking here. Maybe the heat from the heater could be repositioned to send a little radiant heat to the trough. Or wrap a bare copper wire around the heater and to the trough where the water runs. That may transfer enough heat to keep it melted. Can the trough be repositioned, slanted, raised, or lowered so the water will drain fast enough?

unfortunately the trough sits in a styrofoam bed that holds the coil, the trough and the fan.it insulates the fridge from the freezer. There is a metal pan under the coil and heater. It catches the water and directs it to the drain by way of the trough. Some one suggested that I angle the fridge so that the water runs faster, which I did.It will take about 8-10 days to see if this is effective.
