Default Freezer working Refrigerator not working :(
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 596.66992400
Age: 1 - 4 years

Recently our Kenmore refrigerator has been having some problems. The freezer is keeping things cold but the fridge is not. I have cleaned the fridge and vacuumed out all the dust that had built up underneath and it started working again for a while. I'm not sure exactly how long, maybe a couple of weeks or less. Anyways today the problem has resurfaced and I'm trying to decide what to do.

This is the Kenmore with the freezer on the bottom and fridge on the top type model.
It was purchased from Sears Canada about 3 years ago. It seems like a short life expectancy for such a large appliance, and I definitely will not be buying a Kenmore again.

If anyone can give me some suggestions on how to fix or whether it's dead. Just wondering if it's worth repairing or if I should just get something new.

It sound like the fridge may not be defrosting or the fan in the freezer is not working.

If the fridge is not defrosting the air flow will be blocked and not able to reach the fridge section.

From what you have said about it working after you had it unplugged it sound like a defrosting problem.

Check and see if there is an ice build up behind the back panel in the freezer section.

If there is locate the defrost timer in the control panel in the fridge section.

With the compressor running turn the little knob on the timer until the compressor shuts off.

Watch and see if the ice melts, this should take about 20 to 25 minutes.

If the ice melts you will need a new timer.

If it does not melt but the compressor starts back up you have a problem with the heater or the defrost thermostat.

These are locate in the freezer section on the coils behind the panel where the ice is.

You will need a meter to check these.

Here is a link to your fridge model 596.66992400.

The part number for the defrost timer is PS649809.

Your fridge is made by Amana for Sears.

I've had the heater and thermostat checked with the meter and they are working. However today I noticed that the fridge is making a bubbling, gurgling sound.

Here is a picture of the frost on in the freezer:

The gurgling sound is normal but the icing is not.

If the heater and thermostat are good that leave the timer.

The timer is in the control panel in the fridge.
