Default Freezer working Fridge not cold enough
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: ed5gtnxmq00
Age: 1 - 4 years

We have a whirlpool side by side. We started noticing an icey buildup on the inside of the freezer around the top front edge of the freezer. It worked it's way around until the light switch froze up. Now yesterday started noticing that the Fridge was cool but not cold enough to safely store perishable items. The milk had some condensation. And there was a little condensation on the middle of the wall between the freezer and the fridge.

Also, my wife tells me that there was a sheet of ice underneath the bottom drawer in the freezer and some icey buildup in the lower back vents inside the freezer.

What do I need to do? Or what do I need to check?
Thanks!

Your freezer is not going through the defrost cycle like it should.

Locate the defrost timer in the control panel of the fridge section.

You will see a little knob between two screws.

With the compressor running turn the knob until the compressor shuts off.

Remove the back panel of the freeze so you can tell if the ice melts.

The defrost cycle will last about 25 minutes.

If the ice melts you will have to replace the defrost timer.

If the ice does not melt then you either have a faulty defrost heater or defrost thermostat.

You need a meter to check the heater and thermostat.

You should get a reading of about 20 ohms.

Here is a link to your fridge model ed5gtnxmq00.
