Question Freezer working fine. Fridge/fresh section is warm. Now cool are blowing in it.
Model Number: Maytag MTB1956BEW
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hello,

I am facing same problem that others have reported, i.e., my freezer is working fine but fresh food section is totally warm. I have learnt here that this is defrost problem and three things may be involved - defrost timer, thermostat or the defrost heater. One thing I noticed is when I open my freezer door and check in the fresh food section, I feel cool air starts flowing in it but with freezer door closed, it cuts off. Also my issue is how to open the back section to reach and inspect the heater coils etc. I am an electronics engineer & can do this myself with some help how to open the back panel. The back of the refrigerator is totally sealed except for the compressor section at the bottom. I don't see any issue there except that the drain pipe was melted out (as it was touching the compressor which was very hot). I don't see any drainage or water dripping out. My initial hunch is if I keep the refrigerator shut off for 24 hrs. it may self defrost but the problem won't go away. Any help or pointers as to how I can open to inspect the affected parts, will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If the fridge is side by side the coils are on the freezer side. You will have to empty the freezer and remove probally 4 screws and the back panel will pull off. I am having the same problem and haven't found the problem yet. Please let me know if you find your problem.

You might have a motorized damper door in the fridg. section usually in the upper left of the fridge. Pull cover off and if damper door is shut, pull out connector to motor and jam the door half way open.
Also, remove back freezer panel and check for frost. If totaly frosted over, just defrost with hair dryer and check things posted at Appliance repairs, Appliancehelp, Appliances, repairs to dryers washers dishwashers fridges repairs microwaves ge maytag kenmore frigidaire westinghouse inglis, appliance how to take apart information, purchasing an appliance help, model number help,

Smile Thanks.

Hello,

Thanks for taking time to read & provide suggestion to my issue. As suggested, I opened the freezer section wall (back) and found that there was a lot of ice buildup there. I melted it with hair dryer. I found out the defrosting coil & thermostat. Closely examining the coil, it seemed to be burnt out at one end and seemed to be bac (via visual inspection).

My question is if you could point me to right direction as to where I can pick up a new coil for my model so I could try to fix this. That will be much appreicated. Thanks again for your very helpful pointers.

Pull the ends of the coil out and you will see that the coil is indeed broken. You can go to Appliance Parts From PartSelect | Repair Parts For Major Appliances for your part.
