Default PS Experts pls help! Freezer VERY Cold, Fridge Warm
Brand: KitchenAid
Model Number: KBRS22KWAL02
Age: More than 10 years

The fridge is quite cold (5 degrees F), but the fridge is warm (55 degrees F).

This is a second refrigerator that we keep out in the garage. It was quite warm yesterday when I noticed the warm fridge, but it was very hot outside a week or two ago and the fridge seemed to work fine.

There seems to be more air flow into the freezer than the fridge. Is this normal?

Are the fridge and freezer cooled by the same compressor/evaporator? the same air fan?

I have vaccuumed out the coil under the fridge. It was not too dirty to begin with.

What should I be looking for?

UPDATE (edited 8/27 7:30 AM)
Tried some troubleshooting yesterday. Cleaned the condensor coils. Emptied the freezer and fridge and examined the coils behind the back panel in the freezer. They were frosty, but not so much that it seemed airflow was impeded. Then I defrosted the unit. Plugged it back in around 5PM and the temperature in the fridge slowly dropped throughout the evening. It was 55 degrees at 10 last night and 28 at 7 this morning. Does that rule out freon/compressor/evaporator problems or will a weak fridge eventually get cold when it's empty?

If it is defrost-related, how do I begin narrowing down the problem?

I have a Kitchen Aid KSRA25FKSS00 doing the same thing. 0 Degrees ion the freezer won't go below 40 in the refrigerator. I turned on max cool and it went up to 55. The fans are running fine just very little cold circulation through the difuser. The middle separation panel is quite warm. Any ideas?

Thanks, Bart. I was hoping for some input from the professionals at partsselect.com as well, but I guess it's not to be. Seems Sheila responded to every other post from the weekend...except mine! Maybe you and I can figure this out together.

Your problem sounds just like mine. I found another forum that suggested taking everything out of your freezer and fridge, turning up the temperature control in the fridge, opening the doors and letting it defrost for 24 hours. (Have some towels ready because the drip pan will probably overflow if there's significant ice buildup.) Once it's defrosted, turn it back on. If the refrigerator begins working again, it has to do with the defrost cycle. That's where I am.

Warmfridge,
That can't be my problem. I turned off my fridge for several days to clean it out good. When I plugged it back in the fridge never went below 40. I also tried to turn the freezer up to +5 to send more cold to the fridge but it had no effect. Some times my fridge is up to 50 degrees. My neighbor, the original owner had 6 service calls in 6 years for this problem. It seems KitchenAid has no idea what the problem is and based on all the forums I've read it may be a design flaw or a malfunctioning part. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Bart
