Default Freezer thawing & refreezing
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MSD2732GRW
Age: 1 - 4 years

Hi everyone. Hope someone can help me diagnose a problem with my freezer. About a week ago, I opened the freezer and found that it had apparently thawed and refroze within a 24 hour time period. Ice had melted from the icemaker and the puddles had refroze. Freezer was working fine when I discovered this. Threw everything out and replace with bare necessities.

Yesterday morning, I heard a slight buzzing noise for a few seconds, and looked inside, and ice had melted. Put a thermometer in the freezer and it read 50 degrees. Later yesterday afternoon, looked in there again, and it was cold. Put thermometer back in and read 6 degrees.

Refrigerator side is working fine, and was cold when I noticed the freezer not cooling. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Bruce

Perhaps your defrost timer is staying on defrost too long letting it melt all the contents. Your timer should defrost every 8 hours for 20 minutes. You can turn your timer until it goes into defrost and see how long it is before it lets the compressor turn back on. Here's your diagram and parts list. Appliance MSD2732GRW

That makes sense to me. Sounded like some type of timer or switch. However, it appears to be an intermittent problem, because most of the time the cycles seem to be working properly. The two thaws were about a week apart.

Also, something I didn't mention in the previous post, sometimes there is a very high pitched noise coming from the appliance intermittently. I can't hear high pitches very well, so I have to be in very close proximity to hear it. Don't know if that has anything to do with it either, but just noticed this noise within the last couple of weeks.

I'll probably wait another day or two to see if there are any other possiblities, then I'll order a new timer. Thanks.

Here is alink that should be helpful
http://www.servicematters.com/maytag...s/16010154.pdf

I would suspect the defrost thermostat, it should shut off the heater once the ice on the coils is gone. If it does not open the heater will be on for the entire defrost time which is usually not required and will generate too much heat.

Denman,

I don't see a part listed in the parts diagram as a defrost thermostat. The serice manual in the link doesn't cover my model. Any other thoughts?

Disregard last post. The defrost heater and thermostat are one assembly. I'll order one tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

Default Still having problems

I replaced the defrost heater/thermostat assembly. Tonight, the compressor keeps making a buzzing noise every few minutes. Has been doing this for a while, but not as often as it is tonight. Put a thermometer in the freezer and temperature is 37, and the few things that are in the freezer (because it thawed again last week ) are starting to get a little frost buildup on them. This happened before the thaw last week.

I have a feeling that the compressor may be the problem. Any suggestions? I'm assuming that in the event that the compressor needs to be replaced, it is beyond the skills of the average layman. Any suggestions on how to best get it repaired?

Thanks.
Bruce
