Default Freezer shrinking?!
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 253.23024101
Age: 1 - 4 years

Bottom 3 shelves fell out of upright freezer about a year ago, when the freezer was about 2-3 years old. These are the shelves that are mounted to the side. Turns out that the inner dimnsions of the cabinet are larger now than when new. Width of cabinet on the inside increases by 3/8 inch within the first 2 or 3 inches when moving from back to front, eventually maxxing out at +1/2 inch. Outside of cabinet has not been damaged, and inside dimensions are true at back and at top and bottom of front (places where the skin cannot move regardless of what is going on underneath.) Gaskets at sides of evaporator cover also fell out, becasue the gaps they are trying to fill are now so much wider. I guess the foam is shrinking?

Should I get into the cabinet walls and shim the skin out, and if so, with what (I worry about a possible condensation problem)? ... Or should I just try to shim the mounting hardware for the 3 shelves? With the sliding shelves/baskets, this would be relatively simple, but the other one is just the wire frame style with glass over, where the ends are seated by penetrating holes in the cabinet skin.

I have searched many times in many places, but I am surprised not to find any mention of this problem. Am I the only one?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Brian

You should report this to Sears.

It is not normal for a freezer to loose it shape.

They should replace the unit.

Yeah, my wife said they should replace it, too. When I called some time ago, they just offered to send a tech and charge for it (Out of warranty).

I have shimmed out the basket supports and wire shelf receptors. Not as strong as they should be (torque on screws now, instead of just shear), but seems to be working ok.

Thanks

Brian
