Default Freezer & Refrig minimal work
Brand: Magic Chef
Model Number: RB15AA-2A
Age: More than 10 years

Hello:

I have a 26-year old unit. In the last few days I've found that both the freezer &
refrig. are only minimully working, by that I mean that in the freezer, items such as
ice & ice cream are melting and in the refrig. items are only barely getting cool.

Several months ago, the condenser fan was changed and except for a slightly
noisey compressor the entire unit has been freezing & cooling normally.

In order to try to get better results, I moved both thermostat controls to there coldest setting - but after 24-hours there has been no improvement at all.

Any input greatfully appreciated. Thank you.

Check the frost pattern on the evaporator coils by pulling the back panel off of the freezer. If completely frozen over, you have a defrost problem. If so turn the defrost control till the compressor stops. If the unit now defrosts, you have a bad defrost control, if not you have a bad defrost thermostat or heater.
If partially frosted you have a bad freon leak or worn compressor.

Thank you for your reply. There is no back panel on this model. When the unit
was serviced earlier this year, it was pulled out away from the wall and the coils
where all exposed and were normal. I do hear the compressor going on & off as it goes through it's cooling cycles. The freezer it's self seems normal (without any accumlated frost or icing), and the outside of the unit is cool or normal - it's just not keeping anything frozen.

Before the condensor fan was replaced a few months ago, the left side of the unit got very warm (almost hot) when the compressor was running, so I think the fan is working because the cabinet is remaining normal while the compressor is running.

To determine what is wrong, you will need to pull panel out on the bottom of the freezer, and check frost pattern. Only other way is to measure compressor function with a manifold gage on the low side of the compessor.

OK, thanks again for your reply. It looks like this is a job for a tech. I have some
Ice bags in the freezer to help keep the food fresh.

Thanks again.
