Question Freezer is not constantly holding temp
Brand: Amana
Model Number: DRS2662AW
Age: 5 - 10 years

My Amana is acting strange, one day I found the ice melted in my fridge and all food warm. I took the back off and found the evaporator frozen solid, I turned it off and then let it melt off. Put it back together and let it run, it worked fine for 2 days or so.
I decided to lower both the dial temperature settings (since they were both set to max for the two days that the fridge worked fine), then found that the fridge was warm again (it was exactly 60 °F in my refrigerator ) and the ice tray was a pool of water, took the back off a second time and found that the evaporator coil was fine.

I have observed that the compressor runs, evaporator fan runs. I have tested the defrost timer (and found that no matter where I turn the dial and take a reading on all pins on that particular dial position, the multimeter reads infinity on all pins).

I ave also tested the defrost heater and it works fine I presume since it reads neither infinity nor zero.

I have also tested the Defrost Thermostat (while the fridge was near 0 °F and I get a reading of 000.1 ohms)

I have watched the fridge through one entire cycle, and saw that the evaporator coil frosted up, the fan turned on, after the timer hit the defrost cycle I foolishly touched the heater and it was hot, and then saw it start over again.

What should I test or replace? Why is my Amana acting strange? HELP!!

You probably have an intermittant defrost timer or defrost thermostat. I would just replace both. Look them up in partselect.

Default Question about your Defrost T-Stat instalation

I just got the new defrost thermostat. The first one f the two pictures, my question is ; the two don't have the same wiring. The new thermostat came with an extra plastic piece, and has a brown and orange wire placed inside a connector. The original has the orange and brown wires going somewhere to he back of the fridge.

Should I cut the wires from the old t-stat and place them into the new connector and then clip them together.

I ask because I was not expecting to be soldering things together, but if I'm thinking right this is what has to be done.

The new thermostat is basically a switch with no polarity, it can be wired any way. Just splice the old connectors onto the new wires and plug in. Use but connectors or inline splices. Make sure the the but spiices can't collect water, or seal with silicone cement.

I soldered the wires together and turned on the fridge last night. The evaporator coils frosted but I have not see the evaporator fan move at all and the refrigerator stayed at 60°F the whole day. I decided to check all the connections, I don't think that I plugged any terminal the wrong way since its all color coded anyway.

I don't know what else to check, why are the evaporator coils frosting up but the evap fan not spinning(the fan it self works because I saw it spinning a few days before).

Just right now, I noticed that the heater coil did not turn off inside while in the defrost mode, and it got really hot inside, and warped the plastic around it, what the heck is happening?

Below I have included how I plugged in the thermostat and my solder job.

Below Is my solder job, I just actually traced the two wires to the back of the fridge and they don't do anything, they are not connected, so this solder job was useless, but no matter.

You probably scrambled the wires. Usually the evaporetor fan and the defrost thermostat wires are color coded., just check. You can pull motor and stick in an outlet to verify it's ok, same with the new defrost thermostat, just check for continuity while cold, and open whole warm.
