Thumbs down Freezer just making it and fridge warm
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: TBX21AABRRWW
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hi I just moved 2 weeks ago and my firgde made the move as well. It was placed on it side for a little while to get it out of a small door. I am experiencing the freezer barely freezing and the fridge is warm. I got advice to take everything outta the freezer and blow dry the frost away. I am in the middle of doing this now and all of my food is on the kitchen table. Any help would be really great. Everthing else seems to be ok but this is the main function of this applicance. Please help!

Did the fridge work OK for the two weeks?

If after you defrost the fridge it works again then what you have is a defrosting problem.

This could be one of three things:

It could be the defrost bi metal.

It could be the defrost heater.

It could be the defrost timer.

If in a couple of days you find that the problem is coming back, look in the fridge section at the control panel and locate the defrost timer.

All that you will see of the timer is a little button that has a slot in it.

With a screwdriver turn the button until it clicks and the fridge shuts off. The compressor will have to be running so you know when it shuts off.

Once you have done this open the freezer door and you may be able to hear the sound of the heater melting the frost.

This takes about 20 minutes.

If after 20 minutes the fridge is defrosted and the fridge does not come back on turn the little button again and the fridge will start.

You will then know that you need a new defrost timer.

If the fridge does not defrost but starts up then you know it is the heater or the bi metal.

Hi Thanks for the info, I am not sure where to find the timer. Where is the control panel for the fridge?

Sorry I am really ignorant to all of this, trying to learn though. It did go back to working after blowdrying the back. I am keeping a close eye to see if it returns. I am not sure where to look for the timer though.

Here is a link to your fridge model TBX21AABRRWW.

Go to the compartment separator parts diagram and you will see part 648.

This is the defrost timer and it is in the control panel.

Lightbulb Lightbulb moment

I think I have determined that it is not the defrost timer because we marked it and it is still rotating so I am guessing it is still working. When it was turned manually the fridge shut down but never defrosted. So I am guessing it has to be one of the other things the heater or the bimetal. Is this something that I have to call a repair person for, or can this be a DIY project.

Thanks

If you are handy with tools then you should be able to repair this yourself.
