Default Freezer ices up and frig hardly cold
Brand: Kenmore
Age: 1 - 4 years

I have a freezer on top Kenmoor, the freezer works fine but over a period of time will start to ice over and the frozen ice seems to block the air flow to the refrig part. Therefore, refrig stays basically at room temp. I have noticed an increase in my electic bill as well. At about every 1.5 weeks, I unplug and defrost the whole unit but over just a few days the process starts over again. From this sight I have purchased and replaced the "bimetal defrost thermostat" but it seems the problem hasnt been resolved. What can I do next?

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat
Refrigerator Repair Guide: How To Fix a Refrigerator - ACME HOW TO.com

In most of the new units they now have the adaptive defrost control. It senses when to defrost based on how many times and for how long the door is opened. It's more energy efficient but there does seem to be lots of problems with the board.

I might could tell what you have with a model number.

Since you've already replaced the thermostat......

You do have the adaptive defrost control so if the heater and thermostat are ok, it's the control board. I didn't find diagram but here's your part info.Partselect.com - Whirlpool Appliance Parts And All Brands of Appliance Parts

I have checked into the board you suggested, I was looking at the refer today and noticed that the fan doesnt run or at least I never see it running. Would it be possible my problem could be fan related?

Yes if the fan doesn't run it can't blow cold air to the fridge. It won't run in defrost mode and maybe when the door is open. The control board also controls it. You can test it here Refrigerator Repair Guide: How To Test the Evaporator Fan - ACME HOW TO.com
