Wink Freezer ices up
Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: frs20qrcw3
Age: More than 10 years

The freezer ices over, and the fridge part warms up. I have a side by side, no water in the door, no ice maker. I have defrosted the freezer , and then tried plugging everything back in, and it works for a week, and starts icing up again. Is this possibly the defrost timer? How can you tell if this is the problem??

It is possible that it is the defrost timer.

It could the defrost heater or defrost thermostat.

To check the defrost heater and thermostat locate the defrost timer in the bottom left corner of the fridge below the freezer door.

With the compressor running turn the knob on the timer until the compressor shut off.

The fridge will now be in the defrost cycle.

Check in the drain pan and see if the fridge defrosts.

If the fridge defrosted that will tell you that the heater and thermostat are good and you will have to replace the timer.

If the fridge does not start back up you will have to turn the knob on the timer until it does.

If the fridge does not defrost then you have a problem with the heater or defrost thermostat.

You will need a meter to check the heater and defrost thermostat.

The heater should read about 20 ohms.

The thermostat can only be check when it is at operating temperature.

Here is a link to your fridge model frs20qrcw3.

Here is the defrost timer.

Here is the defrost thermostat.
