Clean and check your door gasket
Feel for cold air escaping and/or take a small piece of paper and try to insert it between the freezer and gasket
Sounds like moist warm air is getting int the freezer

Your parts diagram shows a drain plug in the floor, make sure the plug is in

We can slide a piece of paper in and out with the door closed. The plug is securely in though. How can we fix this?

Here is what I would like for you to do. Get some vaseline and run it all around the gasket, on the part that seals up against the freezer cavity. Then push the door closed, and make sure it seals, and what that will do is force the gasket, to magnatize the metal, so when you close the door, it will make the gasket draw towards the metal. This is an old trick.

If the gasket is old and hard order another one and replace it
Perhaps the vaseline will soften the gasket up?
If it is not sealing all the way around do the above
If it is not sealing only on the hinge side especially towards the bottom, make sure the door does not have slop in it
There is a plastic bushing on the bottom hinge which can wear over time
See link
Maytag MQU1554AEW Parts List

PS: Rubbing vaseline on metal will not magnetize it but you will end up with a greasy freezer

Thanks for the assistance, everyone. I will explore try the vaseline but will probably replace the gasket.

Default Gasket still work

Actually, upon closer inspection, there appears to be a rather large gap (about 1/4 inch) between the door and the freezer on the bottom of the opening side of the door (not the hinge side). If we replace the gasket, will this fix the gap or do we need to look at something else.

Thanks.

A 1/4 inch is pretty big
Check the gasket at the top of the door to see how much spring is in it ( how much does it compress)
Then check it where the gap is, if it has a lot less spring to it then it is probably the gasket
Also can you push the bottom so it will seal.
If you have a long straight edge, a level or steel ruler or even a straight piece of wood. Check the hinge side for straightness top to bottom then check the door side. Perhaps the door is warped, unlikely but possible
Carefully check along the bottom seal is there something part way along which is preventing the far edge from sealing correctly. Or something inside perhaps a part of the liner has cracked and moved.
Thats all that comes to mind right now

Is the dryer level?? Front to back and side to side
Remove any items stored on the door, does it close now?? The weight/location might cause the gap.

beanne, if you have a quarter inch gap on the bottom, here is what I always do. This other fellows on this web site might not agree. But anyway, open the door, and grab the bottom of the frezzer door with your left hand, and the top of the door with your right hand and pull the top of the door to you, and the bottom of the door push in. Note, you are grabbing the door, on the end of the closing part, that is the part that seals. Some times there is too much weight in the door, and it warps the metal, If we took the liner off the door, you would be surprised on how flexible the door is.
