Default Freezer "dis-repair"
Brand: Please select
Model Number: ls14ssf
Age: More than 10 years

I know most of you are in the business of fixing things, but I think you are just as qualified for this unusual request. I was given an old GE refrigerator that I plan to chill kegs in. I couldnt find a date on it but I would place its date of manufacture in the late 70's early 80's. My question was this, is there a way to disable the freezer? My thinking of wanting to do this is for several reasons. 1: I would like to store the c02 tank in the freezer. 2: I thought it may be cheaper to operate, only cooling 1 area. and 3: the massive ice formation in the freezer is a pain in the butt to deal with. Please let me know what you think. Thanks.......

Since the cold air for the fridge comes from the freezer you can't disable it and still have cold in the fridge. You may be able to adjust the freezer temp. control high enough to get the temp. you need or you may can replace the freezer temp. control with another type that will maintain the temp you need. Then you could store the tank in the closed off fridge section.

The auto defrost system must not be working to have your ice buildup.

I'm not sure this model is new enough to have auto defrost. There is no blower in the freezer just the metal box around all sides of the freezer. I think the metal box is responsible for absorbing the heat?? I also only see 1 temp control which is in the fridge none in the freezer its self. The fridge has cooling coils in the top of it. I was thinking I could possibly find the line to the freezer and pinch it shut. But it sounds like that may no work out so well from what you explained.
