Default Freezer defroster clogs with ice, then refrig does't cool
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: GS5SHAXNQ00
Age: 1 - 4 years

I think I have a heater problem in the defroster, but don't know what parts I need to check/repair.

The bottom of the Evaporator Coil Shield (seen from inside the bottom of the freezer) freezes up with the water dripping off the Evaporator Coils. When the ice gets thick enough, the refrig quits cooling well. I can hear the fan come on after closing the freezer door, so I don't think it is that.

After I totally get rid of all the ice and plug the thing back in, it starts all over again.

This started several weeks after the freezer was left ajar unknowingly for several hours. It didn't freeze up at that time, but started soon after.

I need help identifing the part(s) that have failed. Any ideas?

There is a test mode that you can put your fridge in to to determine your problem.

On the back of the fridge or under the fridge there should be a sheet to tell you how to put the fridge in to the diagnostic mode.

Follow the instruction and you should find out which part is causing the problem.

Here is a link to your fridge model GS5SHAXNQ00.
