Default Freezer Cools For Awhile and Then Warms
Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: MFU17F3GW6
Age: 5 - 10 years

I have a Frigidaire upright freezer in my basement. The basement flooded with about 4' of water 6 months ago. After we got all the water out and everything dried out, I plugged the freezer in and it worked. It worked for about 4 months without a problem, and then one day I noticed everything had melted.

So, I started experimenting and researching what could be wrong. It sounded to me like the defrost timer could be the culprit. So, I pulled that off, and tested it for continuity. It was all corroded and didn't have a connection between any of the terminals. So, I replaced it.

Now, when I plug the freezer in, the compressor kicks on, and a half gallon bucket of water will freeze within about 5 hours. The coil looks like it is frosting evenly, and everything seems like it is working great.

Then 20 hours+ later the ice in my bucket is thawed, and the compressor is very hot (hotter than a few hours after just plugging it in).

Does have an idea of what could be causing this?

Thanks!

See if the condenser fan under the unit near the compressor is running. It should be running when the compressor is.

Yes the fan runs. It continues to run even when the freezer starts to warm up again.

Also, I should mention. For awhile I thought maybe the defroster was kicking on when it shouldn't be. So, I disconnected the defrost thermostat so that it cannot go into defrost mode. I got the same result. That is I plugged it in, ran great for awhile, froze the water, and then was warm again a day later.
