There is a way to check and see if the heater comes on. Take the back off, and turn the timer with your screw driver, and kick it in defrost. If the heater comes on you should here some crackling noise. Or, if you want, wait about 3 minutes, and through some cold water on the heater, and see if your hear the hissing noise, of cold water hitting a hot element. If you do, Unplug the refrigerator, and check your connections. If you have a meter, put it on ohms, and check the heater. If you get continuity, then the heater is good, and I would suspect the timer. But, while you are there check the defrost thermostat for continuity also. I could be reached at my website at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

i did what you ask, but unfortunately did not hear any sound coming from the back. i did open the back and there is a build up of frost back there. i don't think that the heater comes on at all. i think that the timer is working because i do see it changes position and the fan do shuts off. is that when the heater should turn on? i'm thinking maybe it's the heater that i need to replace.

i'm still having problem with my fridge. i have to defrost it manually every 2 weeks because of frost build up.
i've attached pictures of my unit. when i replaced the thermostat, i only remember cutting the two wires that are connected to the unit. if you look at the pictures, there is a red connector or wire at the right end side of the heater. where does this connect to? i do not remember disconnecting this at the beginning when i replaced the parts. and if you look around the area, there is nothing there to connect it to. and i don't remember cutting anything else, because all i replaced was the thermostat. so, where does it connect to?

Bistik
Isn't it a little late for an April fools joke
You are kidding?

How you expect defrost to occur with one side of the heating element disconnected is beyond me. I strongly recommend you call a service tech.
