Default Evap fan not running-no cooling in refrig section
Model Number: 106.72134101
Age: 1 - 4 years

This is a Sears Kenmore made by Whirlpool.

The evaporator fan located in the freezer is not running, so although the freezer section is fine there is no cooling in the refrig box area. I tried removing all the parts in the freezer to access the fan. However i cannot remove the air vent from the back panel which along with the ice maker, prevents removal of the panel to access the fan.
Question: How do I remove the vent (I removed all visible screws), and does the ice maker require removal.
also, Is there a way to electrically check the fan to see if it is good or just jammed without removing it. I can't find any electrical or physical schematics on this unit.

Thanks for any input,
pops

The diagram could be in the area of the compressor.

The air vent is screw to the back panel of the freezer section.

You will have to remove the ice maker to get the back panel off.

Default Evap fan not running-no cooling in refrig section

Hi Shila,
thanks for your answer, I have removed the ice maker, back panel and door sw., and I found a wiring diag. inside the t/stat panel in the refrig sect.. I ck'd evap fan with a meter - ok -, hooked it up to 120v and it ran ok.
the diag, showed the fan working through the defrost timer & had a section on how to test the defrost timer. I followed the directions but could not determine if it was bad, but, I was watching the timer which was transparent and could not see any gears turning and the defrost heater didn't get warm, let alone hot.
the test stated: 1, remove power cord to unit. 2, turn off t/stat. 3, replug power cord to enter test mode.
after 3 seconds the the control bypasses compressor and the defrost bi-metal energizes the defrost test mode and the timer takes over for 18 minutes and then stops the test.
I believe I should have been able to see or hear the defrost timer operate and the defrost heater should have gotten hot.
Therefore, can I deduce the timer is bad? Can anyone give me any feedback?

thanks again

It stated not to test timer motor with a meter as it has a capacitor inline (internally), and it would be damaged. I followed the directions but could not determine if it was bad, but, I was watching the timer which was transparent and could not see any gears turning and the defrost heater didn't get warm, let alone hot.

Yes the timer should be moving all the time.

Here is your defrost timer.

Hi Sheila,
Just got your message, thanks much. I had already purchased and installed a new defrost timer. Everything seems A-OK now. Unit has been running since friday afternoon and temp is @ 40 degrees f.
I must say Sears Parts is crappy. They would not answer their phone and the directions to the store were totally useless. I followed their directions to the store and still could not find it. It was inside a mall where the building numbers were completely different than the actual street number. Also, the sales/parts person was totally unknowledgeable. I can see why there are so many people on this site looking for help.
Keep up the good work!

Had I followed the installation directions, I would have cut off the connector and had a real mess. I think I will contact cust svc and complain.
