Default Do I need Def. Thermostat or Defrost heater bad? multi-meter test results confusing!
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: tcx22pacaaa
Age: 5 - 10 years

Problem: Refrig. gets warm (50+Degrees)
Testing: I found the coils at the back of the freezer evenly solid with ice and defrosted them several times now. When I advance the defrost control timer, it sends current to the defrost thermostat and heater but the heater/calderon rod will not get hot. I have 117 volts going into the defrost thermostat and 110 leaving it.

I removed the thermostat and when its warm I get no reading with my mulitmeter at all, I left it in the freezer overnight and also got no reading at all, so I am thinking it might be bad????

I removed the heater rod and with my multimeter test 30 volts resistance on it. Is this good? Is this normal or is the heater rod bad?

The gasket on the freezer is a little flattened in the corner and i get a small patch of ice in the freezer near this flattened gasket.

PLEASE HElP - I need to order parts before the wife yells again!

Short the thermostat wires and put into defrost, if heater works= bad defrost thermostat. Also, verify the defrost timer advances on it's own.

Default THANKS - MORE HELP NEEDED PLEASE Appliance GURU !

I bypassed the thermostat and heater rod got HOT! I marked the dial on the timer and it is spinning fine. SO, I replaced the thermostat but the refrig. is only getting down to 46 degrees after cooling for a day.

THe coldest setting is E on the freezer and it is on D now, it is ok to put it on the coldest setting. Also the refrigerator is on 6 out of 10, can i jack it up to 10?

The gasket on the frezzer is crushed in the corner and i get a small amount of frost near the gasket on the door..

There should be a even (very light) frost on the coils when it is working right, never any ice build up though.

Had you defrosted all the ice out of the coils after you put in the new defrost thermostat?

You must have all the ice removed.

How old is the refrigerator?

After you defrost it and remove all the ice do the coils get a nice light frost pattern on them after a couple hours?

100% RPAIR SUCCESS ! THANKS GUYS! THIS FORUM RULES!

The thermostat cost me $102 total with expedited shipping and I replaced it myself. I did blow $20 on a multimeter.

I am sure a service call would have cost more ($300)!

BEEERS ARE CHILLING AT 39 DEGREES in the FRIDGE NOW!
WOOOOOOOT I had to turn the machine to its COLDEST SETTING!
My NEXT fridge will be a SUB ZERO, bye bye GE, lol.
