Default Defrost Timer / Thermostat
Model Number: TFX20DH
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hello!

I have a fridge that recently decided it wanted to freeze up on the freezer, and the fridge was not cooling. Rounded it down to the defrost timer and/or defrost thermostat.

If I MANUALLY rotate the defrost timer, the freezer fan shuts off, the heater turns on and the unit goes into defrost cycle. I then have to rotate the defrost timer OUT into normal cycle. I understand through reading the the thermostat is wired in SERIES to the heater element, so if the heater is working, then the termostate must at least be closed.

My question is, is the defrost thermostat ALSO wired some way to the defrost timer, that would prevent the timer from running? (I.e. would power be switched OFF to the timer when the thermostat is open?)

Like I said, if I manually rotate the defrost timer, the fridge goes into/out of defrost mode and everything else appears to work correctly, so my guess is the timer mechanism itself is not cycling (the contacts all appear to work correctly when switched)

Thanks in advance for the help!

No the timer is not wired in that way.

The defrost timer controls the length of the defrost cycle.

The defrost thermostat shuts the heater off when the coils are defrosted.

You will need to get a new timer.

Can you please check your model number as there are one or more characters missing at the end.

Sheila,

I replaced the timer, and the timer still does not cycle. The rotator does not revolve, it just sits in one spot as the old one did. If I manually rotate it, the timer goes into defrost mode, and everything else appears Ok as mentioned in my first post.

What else could have gone wrong? If I feel the new timer, it appears to have a slight vibration (like it is getting power) but it doesn't cycle...???

I'm at work now, and don't have the suffix for my fridge, but I THINK it's 'H'.

Thanks for the help!

Dave

It will be very hard to see the knob move as it is a clock.

Let it go on its own for a day.

Put a white mark on the knob and one on the timer body in line with each other and you will be able to see if it moves
