Default ? Defrost Thermost
Brand: Amana
Model Number: SRD22S5W
Age: More than 10 years

I pulled the back off the inside of the freezer and found the defrost thermostat with a block if Iced over it but the Evaportator Coils are clean. Would the problem be the defrost thermostat?

The defrost thermostat will not cause icing. If that part where the thermostat is fastened to the coil is the only part icing up it is a sign low freon caused by a leak.

if I may piggyback on your post...

I noticed the exact same problem, and the freeze can no longer freeze (even after manually starting the defrost cycle to get rid of the block of ice).

krdport, is your freeze still cooling after you get rid of the ice? mine isn't. if we have different symptoms, I will start a new post to avoid confusion.

what is the best way to check for leaks? I opened the back of the fridge (where I can see the compressor and such) and didn't see anything unusual. But of course, I wasn't even sure what to look for...

The Freezer cools but that is all it does, it acts more like a fridge then a freezer.
