Default Defrost problem
Brand: Jenn-Air
Model Number: JCD2389DE
Age: 1 - 4 years

My Jennaire side by side frosts up immediately when turned on. After much reserach I replaced the Adaptive Defrost Control (ADC) board and the heating element/thermostat assembly. I figured it had to be one or the other. Still doesn't go into defrost mode.

To force manual defrost in this unit you short the F1 and test leads on the ADC with a screw driver. I was able to do that and get the compressor to go off for a few minutes but the heater never energizes. (the freezer is very cold, so its not the thermostat)

It sounds like the unit tries to go into defrost mode then goes back to normal operation in a few minutes. The frost buildup on the condenser seems extremely quick also. If I defrost with a hairdryer the builduip is complete after only a few hours.

Any ideas? thanks!

Here is a link to your fridge. Page 2-15 of the service manual has a good section on defrost. Also has a service bulletin section.
Maytag Service Library

As to the fast ice up of your coil.
I would get a piece of paper and try to slide it between the seal and the freezer.
You may have an air leak.

Here is a good link to an extensive discussion on this problem.

Denman, I found the Samurai link, thats how I got this far. But the Maytag link is awesome, just what I was looking for thanks!

I think I might be the air leak. Constantly opening the freezer to see if stuff is working. I read where the autodefrost kicks in like 3-4 times per day to stay ahead of frost under normal circumstances, so I guess the buildup given my activity is fairly normal.

Thanks again for the prompt reply and the help!
