Default Defrost problem
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MSD2556AEA
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hi,

Our Refrigerator is not defrosting, I have had to manually defrost the EVAP/HEAT EXCH twice in about a month or so. This last time (yesterday) I removed all defrosted and cleaned then removed the heating element and ohmed it and through the sensor I got 242.7, and throught the heating element (I can't remember) but it was about 20-30s.. Is this telling me that the heating element is good and that my problem may lie in the fridge controller/Adaptive defrost<(where would this be located)?? Is there a way to check the controller/defrost cycle to tell which is bad?? After defrosting/cleaning all and the back cover still off I started the frige the fan started and it seemed to go stright in to a cooling cycle..

Thanks for any info/help

The sensor can not be check in a warm state be cause it has a 240 ohm resistor in it and the bi metal is opened.

The reading you got for the heater is a good reading indicating that the heater is good.

The adaptive defrost control is located in the fridge control panel.

Remove the light shield and lower control panel.

Use a number 22 insulated jumper wire to short between L1 and the test.

The compressor should be running to do this test.

When you jump L1 and test the compressor will shut off.

This will put the fridge in the defrost cycle for approximately 23 minutes.

Since you have the back cover off you will see the heater and be able to see if it is working.

If the heater comes on then you know that the sensor is good and you have a defective adaptive defrost control.

Here is a link to your fridge model MSD2556AEA.

Hi,

Well I jumpered the L1/test and the heater came on, So I guess it's the Adaptive defrost control.. OK... But where is it?? Is it the board itself that I connected the test leads to? Other than that I see nothing as I have the whole control unit seating here on my desk.. And if it is the board next to the freezer controller, why does the picture of it in your parts list look different??

Thank you for more info

Ron

The adaptive defrost is the part that you did the test on.

The pictures are a general reference your model number will get you the proper part.
