Default Compressor, start relay problem
Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: frt21qrjw
Age: 5 - 10 years

I know this has been covered a few times as I did read all the pages.

Fridge started making the buzzing, click noise and quit working, so yesterday I
replaced the start relay and plugged it back in and all seemed great, ran fine all
night. This morning it started doing it all over again for about a hour and would not
start. It did get going and cooled back down, I pulled the fridge back out and took off the start relay again and it seemed very hot and you can see were it was plugged
in on the side of the compressor that it was hot. On the old relay you could see that
the contact was burnt (center) you could look right threw it. I did not replace the
the run capacitor as the guy said it was ok. Do you think that the compreesor is
going bad? I am just trying to see if there is any thing else to ckeck b-4 buying a
new fridge.

Thanks

I always try the easy things first, and I'm not saying you haven't. But I would make sure my fan is working when the compressor trys to start, I would also make sure my condenser is good and clean.

yes fan is working and everything is clean, when I unplug and let it sit for a few hours it will start back up and run fine until it shuts off again and that is when it will start buzzing and tripping again

Let me ask why do you unplug it if it is running fine? If it stops cooling after a few hours and kicks out is the compressor hot?

Sounds like you have a build-up of varnish/sludge in the compressor causing hard start.
A solution is injecting Supco 88 oil additive. Will require a pro to do this.
Don't know how effective this stuff is. The repair cost would probably be more than the fridg is worth. Also, the uncertainty of this repair going bad later is a factor.
Personally, would not go down that path.
