Default Compressor question
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MSD2732GRW
Age: 1 - 4 years

I posted my original question in another post (Freezer Thawing & Refreezing), but now I have a better idea of what the problem may be than I did before, so posting in a new post.

I have been hearing a high pitched noise for a month or two, but since I don't hear high pitches very well, couldn't narrow where it was coming from until last night. I originally thought that the freezer was thawing and the refrigerator was ok, but both are impacted by this problem. When I took the cover from off at the bottom last night, I could hear that the noise was more of a buzz, coming from the compressor. Last night, the buzz was happening pretty frequently, perhaps every 5 minutes or so, lasting maybe 5 seconds.

This morning, I unplugged the power cord from the wall. Compressor still warm an hour or so later. I have been reading other posts which indicate that the problem could be the relay/overload device, or the run capacitor. Before I call for a service technician, I want to make sure that the problem isn't something that I can fix myself. The warm compressor doesn't give me a lot of hope.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Bruce

You can try to put overload and relay kit on the compressor, but I kid you not, usually it does not work, and the compressor, has to be replaced. If you want to try it, I would. If it doesn't kick over, you need a new compressor. The compressor should be under manufacturer warranty, but you will have to pay for labor, and the service call. If you need me you can reach me at my website at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Tom,
Thanks for your advice. In the past, it has gone through this cycle of not cooling (about 4 times) then would cool again. The first time that I noticed this, it had thawed (ice cream had thawed and leveled out) and refroze in less than 24 hours, but the intervals of the buzzing was much less frequent. The onset of the thawing would be preceeded by a little frost accumulating on things in the freezer, and it did this last night.

I would hate to waste a couple of days and more money by ordering the relay assembly, and find that is not the problem. Since it is under warranty, it might make better sense to just give them a call tomorrow.
