Question Compressor clicks on and off, very hot
Brand: Other
Model Number: DWC440BL
Age: 1 - 4 years

A med/small Danby cooler, w/Samsung compressor.

Noticed unit wasn't cooling, but would hear a "click", followed by another about 10-20 seconds later (presumably unit trying to turn on then off).

Pulled it out, noted the compressor was very hot. Unplugged to cool down, trying running agin the next day but same results. The dual "clicks" occur every few minutes.

* The PTC Starter relay(?) thingy (yeah, I know, that's a very technical term) connects on top with a red wire (supposedly from thermostat) and has one connection to the compressor-- the wiring diagram appear to show this (rather small) piece as an "Overload Protector".
* A separate (but they "touch") piece below has the white wire... this piece also has an empty terminal across from the white wire and accepts two contact posts from the compressor.

I put a volt meter on the top (red) wire, always getting around 110 volts. The bottom portion (white wire) never seems to give any reading.

When the first "click" occurs, the compressor vibrates & hums (quiet, but I think that's normal), then shuts off after the second click (10-20 seconds). I'm NOT sure the compressor ran at all when it got really hot.

Can anyone tell me if I'm looking at a compressor (junk the unit, although it's like new) OR something with the PTC Starter relay thingy?

Thanks!

Default

The starter keeps trying to start it but the compressor overloads the circuit. Junk compressor.
