Unhappy Coil Freezing
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: GSH25KGMCBB
Age: 5 - 10 years

Noticed frost on inside back cover of freezer. (Fridge is 5 years, 2 months old.) Removed panel and suspicions were confirmed: coil frozen like a rock. Ordered and replaced defrost thermostat this evening after work. Defrosted frozen coil with (don't laugh, please) a hair dryer. Replaced panel and shut the door. Freezer is "cold." The ice maker is functioning, the water now dispenses from the door. Fresh side temp now down to 40 degress from 60 earlier today.

If the coil freezes up again, suggesting the defrost thermostat was not the problem, does anyone have suggestions of my next course of action? I ask this question "just in case."

Thank goodness for this website. And thanks in advance for any suggestions, or things you suggest I watch out for, in advance!

I generally change the bi-metal when changing the defrost timer as a precaution. Was the fresh food side still cooling? Was the evaporator fan still running? Were all the connections to the heater TIGHT? It can takes WEEKS before you will see all of the ice buildup. Also, make sure you door seal is ok. If bad, it will allow warm air in to freezer and the moisture will freeze on the evaporator.

Defrost timer or in your case controlled by the control board then the defrost heater.

Just dawned on me. Yours has the " glass" style heater under the evaporator. Make sure it isnt open. Ive had 4 this year already with that style heater. The board leaves the heater on too long and burns out the heater. REplace both the main board ( on the back of the unit) and heater together.

Unhappy Help. again

Replaced defrpst thermostat on 3/12/08 and system appeared to be working fine. Now, about 45 days later, defrost forming on interior of freezer wall. Seals are fine, heater element connections appear fine. Any ideas?

You need to test your heater and if it's ok it's your control board . Refrigerator Repair Guide: How To Fix a Refrigerator - ACME HOW TO.com
