Unhappy Chest freezer at -12, runs all the time
Brand: Amana
Model Number: AFC1005BW
Age: 1 - 4 years

Hi, I'm new here and hoping someone can give me direction.

My 2 year old chest freezer is running all the time even at the lowest temperature setting and the temperature is -12 deg F. It use to cycle on and off and maintain temperature at the mid setting to around zero to -5 deg F.

There was a little ice buildup inside but not much but I defrosted anyhow. That wasn't the problem.

My first inclination was that something was wrong with the temperature control so I went out and bought one and installed it. After a couple of days, I still have the same problem. Evidently that wasn't the problem either .

What else could be wrong? I'm not sure where to go now. Anything else make sense for how it is behaving?

Thanks.

If you did not get the sensing bulb in where the old one was it can not sense the temperature.

There is nothing else in a freezer that controls the temperature.

Here is a link to your freezer model AFC1005BW.

Thumbs up Sensor not in far enough

Thanks for pointing that out to me.

I put the old temperature sensor (now that its out of the unit) into the freezer so that i could check operation with my DVM. It looked like it was working. In other words somewhere around the middle of the dial is where continuity would change from open (off) to closed (on).

Before you informed me that I need to stuff that sensor in farther, I was starting to realize that it wasn't doing its sense job very well.

It had a red dot on it and I thought that was the length that it had to be stuffed in. But now I'm going to stuff it in all the way until it won't go any further. And I'll report back.

Thumbs down temp controller doesn't work in factory position

I found that the probe on the temperature controller is pushed in all the way as was suggested to me earlier. I then took the old temperature controller and placed directly into the freezer. After awhile I checked continuity and found it to be working (open cirucit at -12 deg F). I then took it out of the freezer and within a minute it clicks and I check continuity and it's closed (meaning it wants to turn on).

Conclusion: the temperature controller was good all along.

I started suspecting that this probe isn't getting cold enough for some reason. I temporarily installed the temperature controller up by the freezer lid utilizing some jumper wires so that I could insert the probe directly into the freezer. I'm finding that it is regulating the temperature just fine at around 0 to -5 deg F.

This tells me that both the original temperature controller and the new one I just bought are good but do not work well in the factory placement.....pretty weird huh?

I don't know why the temperature controller doesn't get cold enough in its factory position. Maybe its a design flaw. I don't know. I tried to contact Amana today but the person I talked to said that site doesn't have any one technical enough to talk to me.

I may shuffle the stuff around in the freezer to see if that makes any difference but that sure would be hoaky if that was the case.

I hate to have to drill a hole in the freezer to mount this probe inside. I think I may make a few more phone calls before giving up. I'd like Amana to get involved now as I don't think a repairman could fix this issue either.

Anyhow this is a weird problem. Comments welcome if anyone has any suggestions.

Do not drill holes in the freezer the cooling lines are in there and you may hit one and damage the freezer.

If you hit one of the lines it can not be repaired.

When you install the sensing tube shove it in through the insulation until hit the freezer cavity then shove it in the rest of the way.
