Default Changing water filter monthly
Brand: Please select
Model Number: GE PSS26MGPA
Age: 1 - 4 years

Please also see post no. 4 for an update.

The amount of time that my water filter lasts is decreasing. I don't get a warning light to change my filter, but the water flow keeps diminishing.

I would think that the cause would be something other than the water filter, but when I do change the water filter, the flow returns to normal. The last filter is about 30 days old and the flow is very slow. In the beginning it took about 6months for that to happen, but with every replacement the time interval between changes gets less. It has been about 4 years and I only use GE MWF filters and I have ordered them from multiple sources.

I have read about frozen lines and frozen reservoirs and my symtoms are similar, but I am not required to use a hair dryer, or insert something into the dispenser tube or turn up or down the temperatures of the freezer or the fresh food side. All I have to do is change the filter and all is well. The change takes less than 30 seconds, so I don't think it got warm enough to melt ice.

I don't have hard water, discolored water, smelly water at the tap or anywhere in my house. The water for the refridgerator comes from under the sink, where it is fine.

Even when the flow is slow, the water looks and tastes fine.

I have tried to provide as much information as I have. I hope someone has an idea that will lead to a solution.

Thanks in advance!

You might not think you have hard water, but aparantly you have minerals in your water. What you might want to do is put a charcoal filiter between the incoming water line, and the refrigerator. I do believe that will help. Also have you had your water tested? If you need me you can reach me at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

You might be right about minerals, but I live in South Florida and I know it is not Hard water. This house was built with 1200 others over a 3 year span and nobody else is having this problem. We all have about the same appliances and my case is rare!

Thanks for you help and if I don't hear anything else, I might try a water test!

Default Not sure that it is not ice

Let me update this post! I claimed that I did not have an ice problem, but now I am not so sure. I took a cable tie (about a foot long thin piece of plastic) and inserted it into the tube of the water dispenser. Unlike others here I did not get blocked at 3 to 4 inches, but was able to insert the plastic the full 12 inches.

To my surprise, the water flow increased a good amount and stayed that way as I tested it for about 15 minutes. Later in the day (several hours) the water flow returned to the slow flow. I inserted the plastic again and success again.

I have retried this on numerous occassions, always with the same results. I can't fix it totaly, but I do get increased flow. I never get blocked when I insert the plastic. It always goes in easily. I do not see any signs of ice,yet something happens to open the tube up a little. Could there be a kink in the line?

All thoughts and ideas would be appreciated.
