Brand: KitchenAid
Model Number: kssc48fms
Age: 1 - 4 years

I bought a used kitchenaid 48 inch built in from and individual on ebay. The unit had a problem cooling due to a freon leak. The seller was married to a refrigerator technition and was given the unit because the tags were removed. the unit worked fine for 3 years and started to loose cooling about a month ago. The seller is now divorced and stuck with a 600 pound refrigerator. I purchased it for a low price knowing I would have to fix it. The problem is no one so far wants to mess with a refrigerator with no tags. Don't you need just the model number to order parts. Im not worried about warranties, I just want to fix the problem.

If the fridge has a leak the person that is gone to fix it needs to know the amount of refrigerant and the type of refrigerant that is in the fridge.

You can't mix refrigerants.

If you have the model number then try calling Whirlpool

US 1-866-698-2538 Canada 1-800-807-6777. They may be able to get you a replacement tag.

But what if I need a part to buy? How can I do it without tag?

Sometimes the compressor is marked with R134A. Also if it is only four years old, the manufacturer was using R134A, and not R12.

Many large service co's have access to factory service. They can call the factory and get this info. Also you can do this yourself. Try OpenDNS for their web site.
Also, you only need date of manufacture to determine refrigerant. By federal law, they could not use r12 ,effective date was around 1995 but not sure, factory would know. My best guess is it has R134A
