My husband and I just completed building our log cabin as a weekend home. Very basic, no plumbing or heat. We have a brand new refrierator which works great. We are wondering if we need to turn it off during the coldest winter months since we have only space heaters, to be used on weekends that we stay there. Husband says everything inside and the motor will freeze if we leave it running. The cabin is 2hrs. southwest of St. Louis, MO. Our winters are mild, but without leaving the space heaters on all of the time, inside the cabin will get really cold - freezing even.

It is best to shut the fridge off.

The oil in the compressor will get very thick and the compressor will have a had time starting.

This is very hard on the compressor and will shorten the life of the fridge.

Other than the oil thickening due to cold, will the contents freeze or the motor itself?

What ever you leave in the fridge will freeze.
