Default Broken ice maker on Kenmore refrigerator
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 106.55523400
Age: 1 - 4 years

Our ice maker quit working about a month ago. We thought it might resolve itself (by defrosting) when we moved. But it still doesn't work. What should I look at to try troubleshooting the problem?

A few things I would like to know:

Is water coming into the ice maker?

Is the ice maker making ice but not dispensing?

Has someone accidentally shut the ice maker off?

Not sure if water is coming into the icemaker, but the water dispenser still works. We can add ice to the bin and it will dispense, however, it's not making any ice on it's own. Yes, the icemaker is on.

If there is no water coming in to the ice maker it could be the fill valve that is causing your problem. This is located at the back of the fridge where the water line is connected.

Do you have photos? Is this a separate valve from the water dispenser?

How would I test or know if this is actually the problem?

This is a double valve Assembly.

One valve is for the ice maker and one is for the water dispenser.

The best way to test this is with an ohm meter.

If you don't have one you can switch the wires from one solenoid to the other.

Make sure you unplug the fridge before doing this.

Then plug the fridge back in.

If the dispenser does not work this would mean the valve is bad and will have to be replaced.

Here is a link to your valve.

When you say "switch the wires" you mean unplug the fuse-like connectors and swap them? As shown, they are different in size so the smaller one doesn't work on the bigger one. On my fridge, the red plug is tan (ice-side) and the green plug is purple (water-side). I unplugged the tan plug and connected it to the other side. After plugging the fridge back in, the water dispenser quit working. Does that confirm that the valve is bad? Does it matter that the valve you linked to does not look like the one on my fridge (model x74qc1, part#2188746)? Do I have to replace the entire assembly?

With the wire switched will water now come in to the ice maker?

I'm not able to plug the purple (water-side) plug into the icemaker-side since the purple plug is too small -- like putting the green-side on the red-side in your picture. How can I see if water is coming into the icemaker?
