Default Both freezer and fridge not cold enough
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MSD2354DRW
Age: 5 - 10 years

For the last couple of weeks both sides of my side by side haven't been getting cold enough. The compressor come on periodically and it sounds as though the condensor fan is whistleing when it is starting to shut off and then for several seconds as it slows down. I haven't taken the back cover off but it is coming from that area. The wall in between the doors is hot to touch not just slightly warm but hot. From what I have read I think I need to replace the condensor motor but I htought I would run it by you before I order the part..
TIA
Paul

If the fan motor is whistling it may need to be replaced.

This is not likely the problem of the fridge not cooling.

How cold is the freezer?

The wall in between the doors is hot to keep condensation from forming there.

The thermometer that I put in the freezer is at 10 degrees. I have seen it as low as 20 degrees. The setting is all the way up as high as it will go.

Question

While I was waiting for your reply I decided to clean out my fridge today. I took everything out and washed down the shelves.....it is about half as full as it was before and since I did that this morning it seems to be working fine. Freezer is freezing and no noise(whistleing) is comeing from the back.....now what?

In a few days time you will likely notice the same thing start to happen again.

This will indicate that the self-defrost is not working.

The first thing to do is to look in the fridge section of the fridge and locate the defrost timer.

It is in the control panel.

You will not see the whole timer.

You will only see a little knob that has a slot in it that you can use a screwdriver to turn it.

Turn the knob until you get a click.

Open the freezer door and listen to see if you can hear the sound of water hitting the heater.

This would be a good sign.

Then wait 20 minutes.

Then turn the knob again until you get another click.

The fridge should start to run.

If all of this happens the you will need a defrost timer.

If nothing happens then it is ether the heater or the bi metal.

I just had the exact same problem..EXACT and called in a repairman who told me that it was my relay switch and overload which came to a total of 213.00 I am wondering if maybe I got ripped off as I see the parts are way cheaper online, make sure you see everything he's doing if you decide to call someone in, and watch him to be sure he puts a part in and doesn't just reset it, I know now to do some homework before , during any fix it's...
