Default Amana Defrost Inoperative
Model Number: ABB2227DEW
Age: Less than 1 year

Greetings, I purchased Amana ABB2227DEW bottom freezer Aug of 2006 from reputable appl dealer in my small town. The defrost cycle now fails to defrost. Under warranty, Dealer has made visit, diagnosed as three parts in question; themistor, thermostat and elusive adaptive control board. Dealer claims that for three weeks, AMANA has Adaptive board on back order. Dealer doesn't want to make two visits (apparently).
PartsSelect.com list this board pn PS1385001 as 'in stock'. I'm ready to order the board, and 'eat the cost just to have a reliable refrigerator.
Is this the correct pn for a ABB2227DEW, Adaptive Control Board?

I have disassembled, defrosted and reassembled 3 times. This is not good for a 1yr old appliance.
Is Amana not doing well? Is Maytag Amana Jennair not doing well. Is this warranty issue typical of all american made appliances?

PartsSelect.com is a nice website, schematics and all!

To see if the heater and thermostat are in working order you can put the fridge in a forced defrost cycle.

Here is how to do this.

Make sure the compressor is running.

Press and hold the door alarm keypad.

Press and hold the refrigerator temperature down key pad.

Press the refrigerator down keypad again. Sh will appear in the right display.

Press again and Fd and Sh will flash in the display indicating the unit is in the defrost.

If the fridge defrost on it own the control will have to be replace.

If it does not defrost on its own the heater or the defrost thermostat is faulty.

You can fridge in the service test mode to check the heater and defrost thermostat.

You write "Press and hold the door alarm keypad". This Amana doesn't have a door alarm. Are you referring to the light switch actuated by the Refrig door?

I suspected I wasn't the only one with this problem. The defrost system, as I'm told, consists of the defrost element (the black heating element that runs from the left side of the evaporator underneath same and back up right side), a DEFROST TERMINATION THERMOSTAT ( white, round bulb 2-wire that is behind a piece of plastic housing visible on the upper right side of the freezer compartment, looks like a large tylenol capsule), a THERMOCOUPLE (black round with a stainless clip that extends to contact around a 1/4" copper tube above the evaporator) and the ADAPTIVE CONTROL BOARD (located in the frig upper most where the two led readouts are for freezer/frig temp.
The parts in 'caps' were replaced yesterday by local dealer
Adaptive control board Pn MAC12002509, Partselect.com $72.99?
Other Pn's are not listed on my work order but sure that Partselect.com has in stock. If you purchase these you have to be told the 'programming procedure' for adaptive control board. Other two parts can be 'wire spliced" into place.
