Angry Whirlpool Range F8 (second model to do this)
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: RS696PXGQ14
Age: 1 - 4 years

We have a Whirlpool drop-in flat top range that is possibly 2 years old. This replaced an identical Whirlpool drop-in range with the old style burners. (Our house is only 10 years old so these both went bad very quickly.) The first range had errors related to the control paney assembly within 6 or so years and our appliance repairman told us that he did not feel comfortable replacing the assembly because he felt like it may or may not fix the problem and at the time he was going to charge 400-600 dollars to do the replacement, which was half the cost of a new unit (1250 or so). Anyway, we were still able to use the cooktop portion so we waited a year or so before we were able to replace the unit. It was replaced approximately 2 years ago last Christmas and yesterday the oven automatically deployed the lock, which didn't lock the door for some reason, but nonetheless could not be reset. (Also did not display a code at the time.) We flipped the breakers on the house and then reset the oven and held down the button until it revealed a code (F8). This comes up as ERC (the control panel assembly AGAIN). First, does anyone know if this a common problem? Second, is it worth replacing the parts since the oven is still so new? Third, do we replace the Control Panel Assembly (part 4456311) or do we replace the assembly control (part 8301919). Or, how would we diagnose which one we should start with. Thanks so much for any help you can offer!! I'm thinking this is my LAST ever Whirlpool Appliance. Not happy AT ALL that 2500 dollars have been spent and 2 ranges have gone belly up within approximately 10 years.

The F 8 code in the display does stand for a failed electronic control which is part number 8301919 or PartSelect part number PS988593.

Here is a link to the breakdown of your range model RS696PXGQ14.
