Age: More than 10 years
I have a Magic Chef smooth-top electric range...model 6898VRV. We need to install a new membrane switch (touch pad). Can someone tell me how to lift the top without damaging the finish? All help is appreciated!

You should not have to lift the top.

Open the oven door and remove the screws holding the control panel.

Grasp the control panel on the left and right side and gently pull the control panel out and down.

Here is a link to your range model 6898VRV.

Here is your membrane.
